In truth, sheltered from a biting wind, Hilton Salwa Resort’s marina was indeed the warmest place to be as the latest Qatar National Triathlon Series event finally got underway after a 24 hour delay to allow Friday’s storms to blow through.
Lesser but still challenging conditions continued to very much characterise this race though: With 100 meters cut from the 750m swim to stay within the shelter of the marina and the bike course an atypically long 28 KM, this was a day for cyclists with both strength and skill because, although the chasing wind pushed the fastest at well over 50 KPH down to the newly opened Saudi border, side gusts created some jittery moments at these speeds. Those who could stay relaxed and aerodynamic profited and the organiser’s decision to restrict wheel rim depth on safety grounds was justified.

Competitors fully expected to work hard after the U-turn at Bu Samra and perhaps were pleasantly surprised that the up-wind section wasn’t more of a battle. Overall, average speeds were comparable to a more typical race day.
It was Spanish husband and wife, Aday Alvarez and Isora Sosa Caballero, who would each take the wins in Men’s and Woman’s races. Isora swam 9:15, convincingly beating the two swim specialists Sarah Nicholls and Michelle Shillabeer (both TriClub Doha). Her challenger on the bike was Julie Melville (Rasen Adventure Shop), who took back 33 seconds and on the run Toni Snoxell (TriClub Doha) went 73 seconds faster for the best 4.6 KM run split (17:35) of the day but that was nowhere near enough to overturn the swim advantage that Sosa Caballero had on either. The fastest in the individual disciplines; Sosa Caballero, Melville and Snoxell ranked as the top three overall.

For Aday too, a dominant swim (07:43) was a good foundation for a perfect race. Others, with the exception of Guillame Soutter (Team Al Jassra), not coming within minutes of him on the bike and even Ethan Bennet’s (Millfield Triathlon) incredible 15:13 run didn’t bring him close.

First Qatari athlete was Saad Almejali (Qtri) in 8th in his category. Saad led a trio of Mubarak Alajji (NeverWasted Team) and Abdulla Al Menhali (QTri) over the line to close out the top 10 in the 18-39 age group.

With the date shift and weather forecast, there was a 15% drop-out but 263 competitors registered for the Friday event still made the drive down from Doha. They were rewarded with an excellent new triathlon venue at the Hilton Salwa Resort & Villas and hard but satisfying racing. Quite a few wrapped up and took advantage of a post-race hot drink in a glorious beach-side setting.

“We’re so proud that together with the Qatar Triathlon Federation we had the privilege to host the Hilton Salwa Beach Resort & Villas Triathlon on the resort premises. Sport plays a major role in the Qatar National Vision 2030 and the QTF’s National Triathlon Series has been a real driver for the country. Hilton is a corner stone in hospitality and with this comes our responsibility to support and take part in major sporting events and helping
with Qatar’s Vision 2030. With this focus in mind and Qatar’s leading role in welcoming International events, the resort has a fully-fledged sports academy with training facilities, football pitches, multi-purpose playing courts, indoor swimming pools, and a medical center. Where we look forward to host big sporting events and accommodate for sports enthusiasts. “said Etienne Gailliez, Country General Manager, Hilton, Qatar
The Qatar National Triathlon Series is supported by Qatar Olympic Committee and sponsored by Rayyan Water, Carrefour, Rasen Sports, Sports Corner, Yalla Toys.

NEXT EVENT > February 2021 (TBA)
Friday, 10th of April should have been the fifth and final event of the Qatar National Triathlon Series but the ongoing circumstances have resulted in a curtailed series of only three events.
The Katara Triathlon on 8th Nov, 2019 opened the year’s open water racing. This sprint distance event had the same swim and bike routes as in 2018 and a completely new running course, thanks to the fantastic Katara hills running path. Race two was the Dukhan Triathlon (Dec 14, 2019). Dukhan offered a variety of distances: Besides Sprint and Olympic, for the first time in Qatar there was a long distance triathlon. The Series reached its early conclusion with Doha Triathlon (Feb 8, 2020). Being the country’s premier triathlon, it is always the event with highest participation and league points were available for sprint, Olympic and Qatar National Championships races, besides the super sprint race, which is suitable for new to triathlon.
With only three events now possible, a decision has been taken to revise the rules such that all scores will count for the final ranking. Nevertheless, most categories got their deserved winners. A big thank you to Tri Club Doha, Mad Triathlon and UFMBQ for their cooperation in the Qtri Series events.

Although not included in the series rankings, participation of children and youths grew this year. QTF is pleased to see more young people encouraged to take on triathlon. This is a sport suited to children of all fitness levels who enjoy the personal challenge. It is also a worthwhile opportunity for young people to discover competition with no requirement to meet squad selection criteria.
Among the juniors, the youngest age group in the series, there are some great talents who already compete with the best seniors. We only wish this strength would match the number of athletes taking part. Triathlon in Qatar needs tomorrows champions! In this category we saw a reliably consistent podium – Matteo Francesci in front of Halleux and Bennett.
- Matteo Francesci (ITA) – Tri Club Doha 717.04
- Liam Halleux (FRA) – Tri Club Doha 424.71
- Ethan Bennett (GBR) – Millfield School 250
In Junior Women, Ailsa Cameron made a clean sweep of three victories and took home the maximum 750 points.
- Ailsa Cameron (GBR) – Tri Club Doha 750
- Paloma Vayssie (FRA) – Tri Club Doha 250
- Emilie Jaynne Canaria (PHI) – FitQ 231.03

The Men Open category was again dominated by last year’s winner Bernard McCullagh, in front of consistent local Alromaihi and Shillabeer. McCullagh even stepped up to the longest distance at Dukhan, which he won convincingly. However, with the series now dominated by multi-format races, he went the whole year without coming up against some of the strongest opposition; Aday Alvarez coming most easily to mind. It would have been interesting to see that fight.
- Bernard Mccullagh (IRL) – Tri Club Doha 750
- Ebrahim Alromaihi (QAT) – Qtri 712.78
- Barry Shillabeer (GBR) – Tri Club Doha 694.33

Women Open’s top three ladies were separated by just a few points. None of them won a race but consistency triumphed, with Bushell coming on top.
- Isobel Bushell (GBR) – Tri Club Doha 697.91
- Michelle Shillabeer (GBR) – Tri Club Doha 675.85
- Lyndall Jensen (AUS) – Tri Club Doha 661.89
Veteran men category was dominated by Enzo Fascinato, who made a clean sweep.
- Enzo Fascinato (ARG) – Los Gauchos 750
- 2 Ewan Cameron (GBR) – Tri Club Doha 719.19
- Paul Crooks (GBR) – Tri Club Doha 717.89

Veteran women category was also dominated by one athlete. It is worth reminding ourselves that Pia Sunstedt has won every race she has taken part in – triathlon or cycling – in last few years.
- Pia Sundstet (FIN) – Rasen Sports 750
- Daniela Sposi (GBR) – Tri Club Doha 733.12
- Andrea Stadler (ECU) – Tri Club Doha 661.89
Competition among Qataris gets stronger every year. There are more athletes training and racing than ever. National team athlete, Ebrahim Alromaihi, was the strongest in the Open Qatari category while Essa Alkuwari was untouchable among the veterans.
QATARI OPEN MEN:
- Ebrahim Alromaihi (QAT) – Qtri 744.11
- Abdulrahman Aljaber (QAT) – Qtri 683.09
- Fahad Almohamed (QAT) – Qtri 489.83
QATARI VETERAN MEN:
- Essa Alkuwari (QAT) – Qtri 750
- Jamil Al Katami (QAT) – Qtri 659.12
- Fahad Al Groon (QAT) – Qtri 639.43

Series winners will be awarded their prizes at the first race of the 2020/21 season. Please contact QTF if you are leaving Qatar before then.
Looking ahead
Professor Nasser Al Mohannadi, Vice President of Qatar Cycling and Triathlon Federation: “I am delighted with the development of the grass roots of triathlon we are seeing in Qatar. QTF’s National Triathlon Series and the impressive range of triathlon and multisport events organised by local clubs are a real driver for all the triathletes in the country. Covid-19 and the necessary restrictions have hindered our operations and brought an excellent season to an early end but still we are hoping for resolution before the new season, to have a complete National Triathlon Series. However, the first big multisport milestone of the new year will be December’s Asian Cup, which will bring the sport’s elite to Qatar and the concurrent public race should be one of the most multinational and competitive ever held on these shores.”

The fourth edition of the Doha Triathlon Championship, organised by the Qatar Cycling and Triathlon Federation, was unveiled at the Museum of Islamic Art Museum on February 7, 2020 under the patronage of Qatar Olympic Committee, The Royal Air Maroc and in cooperation between the Federation and the Qatar Museums Authority.
The number of participants reached nearly four hundred athletes from different age groups and contested in Olympic, Sprint, Super Sprint and Youth Race distances. Added to the tournament was the classification for the National Championship for Qataris for the second edition in a row, which aims to encourage Qatari players to compete in the international triathlon events.

The organising committee of The Doha Triathlon had put the final touches before the start of the race. Swimming course was inside the Museum of Islamic Art bay, prepared in cooperation with the Marine Sports Club. The bicycle course spanned until the Sheraton Doha Hotel and the running course in MIA park. Each category had different distances that were set in the race schedule:
Olympic distance: which includes 1500 m swimming, 40 km of cycling and 10 km of running.
Sprint distance: which includes 750 m swimming, 20 km of cycling and 5 km of running.
Super Sprint: which includes 375 m swimming, 10 km of cycling and 2.5 km of running.

The enthusiastic atmosphere and the relatively moderate weather had a big factor in the success of the event that the contestants and the public alike enjoyed, as the championship did not witness any obstacles. The event was facilitated by Qatar Red Crescent, Qatar marine rescuers and Traffic police along with almost 100 race makers, which prepared a safe event.
The races saw no big surprises on the podium. Saad Al Mejali, member of Qtri triathlon team defended the title of the Qatar National Champion from 2019. He beat Ebrahim Alrumaihi followed by Abdulrahman Al Jaber.
The main event of the day – Olympic distance race was won by Spaniard Aday Alvarez in men open. Enzo Fascinato (ARG) won in the veteran men category. Gerda Maria Dumitru (ROM) won ladies open race and Pia Sundstedt (FIN) won the Veteran Women category.

In the Sprint race, the Series leader Berndard McCullagh (IRL) dominated the race and extended his lead in Open Men. Isora Sosa (SPA) won the ladies open category. Adam Kertezs (HUN), new name on the block, won in the Men Veteran category, and very familiar name Daniela Sposi (ITA) won the ladies veteran category.
Mateo Francesci (ITA) won the junior men race and Aisla Cameron (GBR) won the junior women’s race.

Dr. Mohammed Jeham Al-Kuwari, President of the Qatar Cycling and Triathlon Federation commented: “Today we saw the results of the fast growth of triathlon in Qatar with large participation in the events, where the Doha Triathlon recorded a large participation of athletes from more than 47 countries. We are happy with the level of organization of the fourth consecutive edition of the Doha Triathlon. We saw a strong race and big rivalry among players, which will undoubtedly ad to acquiring much needed experience for international events to follow.
Doha Triathlon is wetsuit optional
If you are wondering if you need a wetsuit to participate in the Doha Triathlon, here is our advice.
The water is expected to be around 20oC. At this temperature, ITU rules designate the swim as wetsuit optional for all race distances.
In practice, for inexperienced swimmers, we advise wearing a wetsuit for the Olympic distance 1500m swim. However, the temperature is not extreme and experienced swimmers from colder countries may have no concerns. “Wetsuit optional” means that you decide.
In the Super Sprint/Youth 4 race, we expect quite a few first timers will be participating and do not expect all to own wetsuits. At the 9:00am start of this race, the air temperature will be warm and for a distance of 375m, swimmers will be in the water a relatively short time.
In summary – wearing a wetsuit is optional but advised for longer distance, weaker swimmers and those unused to the cold.
Tips
A scuba or surfing wetsuit will keep you warm but is not easy to swim in. Be sure to try it out before race day
Triathlon wetsuits are designed for swimming. They are close fitting, flexible and increase buoyancy but if borrowing or buying a suit, again be sure to practice. Your first swim in a wetsuit can feel a bit unnatural.
Apply baby oil or a specialist anti-chafe product around your neck to prevent wetsuit ‘burn’ but don’t use petroleum jelly (Vaseline) as it degrades neoprene.
If swimming without a suit, prepare by taking cold showers in the days before the race. This will ready you for the shock of entering cold water.
The opening event of 2019 – 2020 Series started last Friday with beautiful Katara Triathlon, presented by Royal Aire Maroc. The prestigious venue and popularity of the National Series has drawn a large number of 300 + participants with adults participating in Triathlon Sprint event and those younger than 16 had to tackle with Aquathlon.

With more races than ever, plus good competition against the best of the expat community, the expectation and opportunity exists for Qatari top triathletes to raise their level and aim to be more competitive – not with just one another, but against the rest of the world!
Over the fast sprint distance event (750m swim, 19km bike, 5.2km run), McCoulagh (IRL) came close to sub 1 hour time trailed by Mouchine Rhaili (MOR) and former elite national champion, Ebrahim Al Romaihi (QAT) who competed with the top men overall. Getting back to his old form from last year after almost ten months of injuries and illness. A few minutes behind him it was a tight race for 2nd Qatari, with Mubarak Al Ajji and Abdulla Al Kaabi doing the majority of the race shoulder to shoulder. Both, who are more focused on long distance, managed strong performances and made up lots of ground in their overall placing over the bike and run.

RESULTS MEN ELITE:
Bernard Mc Coulagh 1:01:14
Mouchnie Rhaili 1:04:48
Ebrahim Al Romaihi 1:05:31 (1st Qatari)
Abdulla Al Kaabi 1:10:42 (2nd Qatari)
Mubarak Al Ajji 1:10:48 (3rd Qatar)

All in all, the team showed strong performances with encouraging signs of improvement. With the cooler weather now here, lots of work still to be done and Qatar Triathlon Federation providing opportunities for home-grown talent to develop experience locally, we are keeping one eye on the year ahead.

Best overall veteran men was Enzo Fascinato (Arg) while best Qatari veteran men was Essa Al Kuwari. In the team competition Rasen Adventure shop trio composed from Marwan Jalham, Mustafa Mustafa and Chris Musengo came on top.
At the women’s level, Olympic champion Pia Sundstedt was the fastest women of the race with a time of 1h 10m 10s. Pia was competing in Veteran category while Sophie Clark was the fastest in open women category.

Dr. Mohammed Jaham Al-Kuwari, President of the Federation expressed his happiness and optimism for the strong start and excellent organisation of the first event of the Qatari National Triathlon series which was held in perfect location of Katara Cultural Village and thanked all the sponsors and partners of the event, namely Royal Air Maroc, Qatar Olympic Committee, Rayyan Natural Water, Qatar Cancer Society and all the local triathlon clubs.

The event enjoyed the presence of Mr Mohamed Sitri; Ambasador of Kingdom of Morocco to Qatar who was very pleased with the event which reflects the ability of the sisterly State of Qatar to organize major sporting events and world championships which increases (Arabs) and Moroccans participation in particular. It makes them proud that this sporting and cultural demonstration makes a bridge between the different people of the world and also demonstrates their performance.

The Pearl-Qatar was the final venue for the Qatar National Triathlon Series. A five races series started November with Katara Triathlon, followed by Al Ghariya Triathlon in December, main event of the series was Doha Triatlhon in Mia Park in February. Penultimate event was in Lusail City in March and final one last Friday in Pearl-Qatar.

Almost 300 athletes including teams and kids participated in the so called “Sprint” event which featured 750 meters of swimming on Qanat Quartier beach, 20 km of cycling through main Pearl-Qatar roads and 5 km of running around Qanat Quartier. The race was very intense since it was a decisive for the final Series standings where best four out of five results counted.
Spaniard Aday Alvarez finally made it on top in open man after series of second and third places. Second place was won by Irish Bernard Mccullagh and third by Morrocan Rhaili Mouhcine. Triathlon is becoming popular among Qataris. The same order stands also in the Series, where Almohannadi claimed four victories in four races and can be declared as a winner of this season’s Series. Caroline van Aartrijk won among Qatari Veteran Women and is already a winner of the 2018/2019 Series.
Team relay competition saw a staggering 20 teams taking on the challenge. The fastest time of 57m 59s was done by Ismail Dergaa / James Moffat / Adil Adnan Faqruddin.

Al Ghariya Resort was the venue of the second event in the Qatar National Triathlon Series this Saturday, 15th of December. The sprint triathlon distance with750 meters of superb swimming conditions, 20 km of flat but windy cycling leg and always difficult 5 km run for the finals took a lot of energy from 160 participants.
The open man race was almost exact copy of the first event (Katara Triathlon) which saw Spaniard Aday Alvarez taking the early lead in swim and bike, only to lose the advantage on the run, where young prospect Ethan Bennett (GB), stole the show in final two kilometres of the run and made back to back wins. Third place was won by Irish Bernard McCullagh. All Tri Club Doha. Bennet has maximum number of points from the two events, with a minimum lead in front of Alvarez.
Other categories also saw more or less same athletes on the top places. Open women’s race was won by Isora Sosa Caballero (SPA), followed by Toni Snoxel (RSA) and Daniela Sposi (GB), both Tri Club Doha. The same order is also in the Series standings.
Lee Bennett, (GB) (Tri Club Doha), already won the Al Ghariya Triathlon last year, only to repeat the win in Veteran Men category. In second place finished Enzo Fascinato (ARG) (Los Gauchos) and in third Christophe Leuranguer (FRA) (Tri Club Doha). Bennet (senior) has also maximum number of points for the two events and is holding firmly for the lead.
Fastest women on the course and winner of Women Veteran category was Finish athlete Pia Sundstedt, in front of Julie Melville (GB) (Rasen Adventure Shop) and Andrea Stadler (ECU) (Tri Club Doha). Sundstedt also has a substantial lead in the Series.
Mubarak Alajji was the fastest among Qatari Nationals, followed by Abdulla Shaheen Alkaabi and Abdulrahman Aljaber. With Ebrahim Al Romaihi missing the race this time, Alajji took over the lead in the National Tri Series.
Qatari veteran race was won by Prof Nasser Al Mohannadi in front of Ali Al Najdi (all athletes are members of Qtri club). In third place came Essa Al Kuwari. Al Mohannadi is leading in the Series standings.
Fatma Issa was the best Qatari women and Caroline Van Aatrijk (Tri Club Doha) best Qatari veteran women.
President of Qatar Cycling and Triathlon Federation Dr Mohammed Al Kuwari and Professor Nasser Al Mohannadi, QCTF Board Member, Vice President for Triathlon and Executive Director of Qatar National Triathlon Series both participated in the race: “This was the second event in the Series of five which are directly supported by HE Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani. We highly appreciate this support which enables us to lay the foundations in developing the sport inside Qatar as well as representing Qatar internationally. We are very happy with the growth of numbers of locals and expats taking up Triathlon as their sport and way of life. We are looking forward to seeing even more participants in the other three races which will happen in MIA park (Feb 8), Lusail (Mar 22) and The Pearl Qatar (April 19).”
All the results and the Points standings can be found on the official website of the Series: www.qtriseries.com
The Al Ghariya Triathlon was organized by Qatar Triathlon Federation and supported by Qatar Olympic Committee, Ashghal, QNB, Royal Air Maroc, GMC, Rayyan Water, Rassen Adventure Shop, Carbon Wheels Bike Shop and venue provider Al Ghariya Resort.
Next event in the Qatar National Triathlon Series will be the iconic Doha Triathlon on 8th of February in MIA park. www.dohatriathlon.com
